SHADES OF 1938 'WAR OF THE WORLDS' BROADCAST IN BELGIUM

BRUSSELS--It appears that the Belgians have been hoodwinked by a broadcast that reported in a fictional-context that the Flemish-provinces of the nation had seceded. This was actually done on state television (RTBF), and a 'this-is-fiction' warning only came about 30-minutes into-the-program. This is a touchy-issue in Belgium, as the Flemish-part (Flanders) of the country holds the better-territory, while the French-speaking sections (Wallonia) languish. Both language-groups essentially hate one-another intensely, so the broadcast is a pretty touchy-issue. But both-regions are condemning the broadcast as hyperbole--it depicted the Flemish-speakers as the seceding-region. Keep-in-mind, also, that NATO and the EU are headquartered in Belgium. The proverbial flooding of the phone-lines occurred. Orson Welles would be amused, while European leaders are not.
