THE INVASION OF IRAQ AS GAS STATION STICK-UP

WASHINGTON--It's entertaining to watch all of the Bush administration's allies fall. Jail? Well yes, but besides that fact they're fleeing the Bush/Cheney/Rove axis of evil as fast as they can. Now we have a Washington Post story giving us the lay of the land--even the neocons who were the architects of their respective pseudo-ideology are jumping-ship. As early as late last-year (post-Katrina), Grover Norquist began making-comments that the Democrats were needed to 'reign-in our excesses', but it was too-late then. It was obvious shortly-after the invasion of Iraq that a disaster was unfolding, beginning with the decommissioning of the Iraqi-military. This wasn't even done in Germany in the aftermath of WWII, as many of us observers noted at the time. And no, there was to be no Marshall Plan, either. Yet, as the war has worsened, and the violence has deepened, the Bush administration has continued their comparisons to that conflict. The American public responded in the elections to this impudence, and rewarded the Democratic party with a landslide-victory and control of both Houses of Congress.

But it's easiest to look at the invasion as simple criminality, akin to the robbery of a gas station, only with an occupation that is as insane as the siege of a crime-scene. Imagine that the stick-up decide to stay at the gas station, based on a similarly irrational-logic. It's as if the robbers said to themselves, 'Hey, we got enough food, water and gas to escape eventually.' But the problem is the same: the jig-is-up, and we have you surrounded. Yes, Keystone Cops. It's just a strange irrationality for a cornered-thug to hold-up the inevitable. We'll see ample-proof of this assertion when the investigations begin. There will be the standard stalling, diversionary-statements and actions, projection-of-blame (already happening) that we saw during Watergate and Iran-Contra, and even with Clinton (though he had committed greater-crimes than getting-laid).

Indeed, it's safe-to-say we can call the invasion of Iraq the largest-mounting of a gas station stick-up job. The objective was to control Iraqi-oil--not to pump more out, but to slow the flow of oil towards increasing the international-pricing. Added to this fact were the security-justifications for the last-round of gouging at the pumps, with the specter of global warming as the backdrop. The illegal-invasion bears all the hallmarks of a primitive-criminality, and there's nothing that complicated about it, really. Kenneth Adelman's (an architect of the war) final quote in the Washpo article is stunning, because it betrays its subtext: 'Most troubling, he said, are his shattered ideals: "The whole philosophy of using American strength for good in the world, for a foreign policy that is really value-based instead of balanced-power-based, I don't think is disproven by Iraq. But it's certainly discredited." ' He's admitting (openly) that he just wants the ability to project American power, a rare-glimpse into the behind-the-scenes culture in Washington. Oddly, the author of the article (Peter Baker) doesn't note this, but deserves credit for giving us the quote. So, Adelman's lesson from Iraq is...well, nothing. He never believed in any lofty-goals, he lied. What a surprise, I know. And what a genius that Karl Rove was, illustrating that all the neocons could manage was seizing-power, just not governing. You got me: this is what they have-in-common with National Socialism and her sister, Bolshevism.

Masters of Horror: H.P. Lovecraft's 'Dreams in the Witch House (2005) review

Amazing is the only-word I can find to express how good this short-film is. Mick Garris deserves thunderous-applause for initiating what will probably be the most-important development in horror in over 20-years, and possibly ever. While Stuart Gordon has done Lovecraft proud with ReAnimator (1985), From Beyond (1986) and Dagon (2001), this simply excels-them in capturing the dread and cosmic-horror in the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. Insofar as horror goes, this is Gordon's finest-addition, and maybe the best translation yet of Lovecraft-to-film. I read the short-story 20-years-ago, and this summarizes it well. Lovecraft-purists are going to have their hackles-up, but the omissions and changes still capture the spirit of the original and do not detract from the basic-thrust of its plot. Frankly, an exact translation of Lovecraft to screen would be boring and slow. It would feature protagonists who aren't very easy to relate-to, and they wouldn't even be likable--something you need in a movie so that the audience can use them as a surrogate for themselves. How else can one be drawn-in?

Yes, the cloven 'Black Man', and a trip to the surface of another planet are not-present, which is fine. Do we really want to see Lovecraft's racism on-display, especially when he rejected-it at the end of his life? The answer is a resounding no, and it does no justice to Lovecraft or who he was when he died. People also tend-to-forget that in some areas, Lovecraft can get tedious, often going-on for too-long with descriptions of things, or he just meanders in some literary-twilight. Yes, you can actually improve-upon some of his work, I contend. Dennis Paoli and Stuart Gordon have achieved this feat, and where Lovecraft was bad at warm-characters, the writer(s) and director compensate. I truly love and care about the characters in this story, especially the mother and her child. The fears of this story are so primal and basic--everyone fears for a baby in a movie, it's true.

What excites me so-much about this short-film is how effectively it conveys many of Lovecraft's themes: the fear of losing-one's-mind, the fear of women, the fear of the unknown, the fear of a loss-of-control, the fear of mortality, and-then-some. Also very exciting is how well Gordon and screenwriter Dennis Paoli realize the Witch--I would say this is the best-depiction of what the Puritans, and Medieval Europeans thought witches were, and what they did. Usually, they try to steal babies to sacrifice to some dark-power. But Lovecraft's genius was taking physics-theory to explain witchcraft, and a witch's powers. This is unique for writers of his time.

To the uninitiated, H.P. Lovecraft's tomes seem to have appeared, fully-formed, but he was an avid-scholar of New England folklore and the literature of horror. Much of the rule-book he uses for the witch and her powers and actions are from the writings of Cotton Mather and other Puritanical leaders, thinkers and witch-hunters. It's likely he even consulted the witchfinder's-manual, 'Malleus Malificarum.' Lovecraft didn't believe in the supernatural as a reality, but he did accept the possibility that odd-phenomena did exist, and could be explained by science at some point. This would be known as 'supranormal', and that's the type of tale we have here.

So, while this tale and many-others written by him seem fantastical, some elements are not-entirely implausible based on his scientific-philosophies! 'Dreams in the Witch House' is not-unlike a rational-mind trying to grasp how a witch could be possible, scientifically. This little crumb-of-plausibility is a component of what makes the writings of H.P. Lovecraft so scary, and so contemporary. Even educated adults can entertain their reality, and this film captures this reality in every respect. People tend to forget that modern-science comes from alchemy, after-all! The story concerns Walter Gilman, a Physics-major, who has found a room at 300-year-old house in Providence. Yes, in the short-story, Walter already knows the reputation of the house, but I think it was wise for film to omit this. Walter represents we, the audience, and this is a story of curiosity, discovery, and tragedy. Walter notices that his theories on multiple-universes, and his mathematical-maps resemble the shape of a corner of his room. In time, he begins to have dreams of meeting a familiar--a rat with a human-face, perfectly in-keeping with the lore of witches! Eventually, it becomes clear from an older-tenant, and other dreams, that the witch is very-much alive within the house, and has found a way to live for centuries in another dimension. She wants Walter (us) to fetch her a child, the infant-son his neighbor.

There is a sense of dread, sorrow and inevitability in Walter's situation that echoes the victims of witches in lore. It is a situation without-much-hope, the only exit being death or insanity, so very Lovecraftian. Anchor Bay/IDT have done a perfect DVD, no-complaints here. The transfer is perfect, the audio is perfect, and the extras are incredibly-generous and substantial for the most die-hard-fan of Stuart Gordon. Richard Band's score is wonderful, and makes this story all-the-more timeless in its sorrow, grimness and evocation of mystery. It has been 12-years since Band has done a score for Gordon with his excellent score for Castle Freak (1994), I cannot sing his praises enough. It has been too-long, and thank-God it finally happened. The entire Masters of Horror series promises to be superb, a great-day for true fans of horror. Gordon and his collaborators are now filming his version of Poe's 'The Black Cat' with Jeffrey Combs (Reanimator)!

WHY IMPEACHMENT ISN'T NECESSARY (VETO THIS)

WASHINGTON--It's not going to be necessary because of all the investigations, jesus. The GOP and the Preznent are already firing-vollies, which means they're screwing-up--they're making it clear they won't be cooperative or bipartisan as they enjoin the Democrats to do. Well yeah, if you're a liar, you project your own shortcomings onto your victims. Sure, the Democrats aren't perfect, but they aren't the GOP, which is why they got voted-in, and many GOP-candidates didn't. At least they had Joe Lieberman, who is now being vaunted as a savior and 'the most powerful man in the Senate'--sorry, that's a L-I-E. Any Democrat who's pushing it is basically a right-wing mole, a wolf in sheep's clothing and they should be purged eventually. One question to the GOP: where's the 'nuclear option' now? International observers will get the added entertainment-value of watching the cha-cha line into prison...

WASHINGTON--This is actually a great day in America, but Speaker Pelosi has an enormous job before her, and some trust to regain. First: Iraq, and a general withdrawl-of-troops, but high-on-the-list is a complete removal of the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act, they must be repealed for a real new-day in America. Will she join all those who stood-against the Patriot Act, like Russell Feingold, Dennis Kucinich, Jim Jeffords, Robert Byrd, Daniel Akaka of Hawaii, Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Carl Levin of Michigan, Patty Murray of Washington and Ron Wyden of Oregon. All of these folks need your support, write them, keep encouraging-them. Why? Because all of us can now be arrested and held indefinitely without-trial! This should be enough. Consider this: the Bush adminstration had the Patriot Act ready-for-passage less than one-week after the attacks, which is troubling. Did they have it 'on-the-shelf', waiting? Investigations might reveal this as a fact.

The majority of the Senate that voted-for a renewal of the Patriot Act were Republicans, and even Nancy Pelosi voted to renew the bill in early-March of this-year. But the ten who voted-against renewal on March 2nd were cultivated by Senator Russ Feingold, who was alone in his vote against the Patriot Act in the first-run after the attacks of September 11th, 2001. Now that we no-longer have such a climate, it's time to return to earth. America doesn't need an Enabling Act like the one given to Adolf Hitler. In voting-for the Patriot Act, certain Democrats might have made the same gamble that Hugenberg and von Papen made--that they could give the Bush administration unlimited power, but be able to 'tame them' later-on. This could be why the Patriot Act passed just 45-days after 9/11, with little debate whatsoever. The same can be said about the war in Iraq, virtually nobody in Congress debated the logic of the invasion. Is it Weimar time? We'll see.

'IF I DID IT' BOOK & TV SPECIAL WILL HAVE O.J. SIMPSON COMMUNICATING IN THE THIRD-PERSON (PAST SUBJUNCTIVE)

THE UNITED STATES--We are a happy culture, aren't we? Some will say that this approach being taken by O.J. Simpson is somehow 'new', but it isn't. Having a murderer write-about or talk-about their crimes in the third-person began with the book 'Ted Bundy-Conversations With a Killer' in the mid-1980s. The work came from a brainstorming-session between interviewers Stephen G. Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth, after it became apparent Bundy wasn't talking because it could threaten his appeals from death row. So they decided to ask Bundy the questions about a 'hypothetical-killer', and Bundy could cut-loose on nearly everything he did. It works well, and yet Michaud & Aynesworth felt Bundy didn't give them what they wanted (to cover their advance from the publisher):

HA [Aynesworth]: It's frustrating, Ted, to bounce up against this stone wall. What does it matter if you tell us the truth now? ...

TB [Bundy]: That's your problem.

What did they expect? A full-confession? It boggles-the-mind, and now O.J. and some other publishers are going to trample on the graves of someone else's children. At least the Bundy book has socially-redeeming value to it, it's used in criminology classes, and by FBI-profilers. But the real catch was that it was partially in the past subjunctive, through the hypothetical-experiences of someone else in the recent-past, and even more abstract than that at-times. O.J. seems to need money--and desperately. The bills for the civil trial, and the victim-restitution he has to pay the Goldmans must hurt. And so, ironically, Bundy had nothing to gain from his interviews, except furthering the understanding of the modus operandi and psychology of certain serial-killers. This is actually commendable, even for a serial-killer.

However, O.J. was convicted in the civil trial, so he's probably putting himself at-risk, which desirable. It's a testament to the doddering-insanity of a washed-up athlete who always lived a life based around violence. Rumor has it that a wealthy-businessman in Michiana (who was a USC alumni when O.J. was playing there) has O.J.'s Heisman trophy, and secretly sends the chump money to support-himself. You cannot say Americans don't take their Football seriously--they might kill you. Besides, it's not as if O.J. Simpson is the first athlete to talk about himself in the third-person. Bundy was even approaching the poetic in his final-interviews when he said, 'Oh well, who'll remember us in a hundred years?' Yes, who will? But they will remember O.J. and Ted Bundy. Anonymity is preferrable.

Is Wal-mart selling Nazi paraphernalia?

THE UNITED STATES AGAIN--You gotta love reactionaries on the Left and the right. The blogosphere is going ballistic over a Wal-mart selling t-shirts with a "Nazi-skull emblem" on them. Ferchrissakes, pay attention to Iraq, watch the lame duck Congress so they don't pass any more totalitarian laws.

Just do something useful.

The image is the SS Totenkopf (death's head) symbol, often worn by American bikers. It's pretty obvious this is an overreaction and that the shirts are a mistake by a lazy graphic designer.

But what if they sold the real thing? What if they sold actual Nazi paraphernalia from 1933-1945? I wouldn't be bothered by it at all. Really? Nope. People should have physical artifacts to prove that Nazism and the Holocaust really happened. These are objects with no power other than what we project onto them.

If you think a swastika or an Iron Cross holds some strange power over you, you might consider an analyst. Wal-mart is removing the shirts, so it appears that democracy's safe for another week. But we all know that it was Nazi paraphernalia that started WWII: an entire generation of Germans were hypnotized and obeyed all those medals, posters and uniforms, not Hitler. "But why would you even want that stuff?" I think I just said why.

The Wicker Man (1973/SPOILERS) review

'Oh Christ, oh Jesus Christ!'

Christopher Lee is dismissive of a lot of his screen-work, but this is one of his favorites (along with The Whip and the Body). It's hard to call this a horror film, but I guess you could say it is, depending upon who you root for. There really are no villains in this film, and hardcore religionists who would say the pagans who inhabit the island are evil are just flat-wrong.

Western civilization still has its sacrifices in our American death penalty, and in warfare.

Almost every generation is called-up to give of their numbers to Mars and the bottom-line. So-called conservative economists argue that a minimum-of-poverty is needed to maintain the tyranny of consumerism, the New Fascism.

There are sacrifices-aplenty in our 'modern' world, and the results are hardly-removed from pagan-sacrifices, just physically-removed and indirect from our daily lives (what could be more modern?). Oddly, the film is critical of both the ancient and the modern.

No, this is more a thriller with a 'horror reveal' at its climax, as it was originally conceived by director Robin Hardy. Sadly, the producers of the failing UK studio balked at his cut, and we have been left with cobbled-together theatrical and 'director's-cut' versions of the film with many of the scenes and insert-shots restored, but from shoddy sources like videotapes. The original-negatives of deleted material were hidden in a hole on an English country road according to Christopher Lee and others close to the production.

Why? Why did RKO destroy an hour of Orson Welles's 'The Magnificent Ambersons'? Revenge for Citizen Kane, of course. This is done as retribution by some producers, so that a director can never reinsert the footage. Why? Partly because producers cannot usually create movies like a director does, and some of them resent this fact. It also gives them a chance to legally-assert authorship, and thus solidify their ownership of a 'property' based under international copyright laws.

Due to the butchering of The Wicker Man, Christopher Lee has attempted for decades to do a remake, but it appears that this isn't going to happen with him now, and he refuses to discuss the Cage version.

The Nicholas Cage remake can only suffer from this fact, since it doesn't improve-upon the original. It actually does a poorer job, yet has a budget almost twenty-times the 1973 version. The remake basically says nothing-new, and actually takes a very wrong-headed attitude towards women.

Literally 'stealing the show', Lee plays the enigmatic and charming Lord Summerisle, and he haunts the entirety of the Wicker Man until the brutal ending. The other protagonist of the film is the character of Sergeant Howie, who has been sent by the mainland-Police to investigate the disappearance of young-girl on the island, namesake of the Lee character.

This island is Lord Summerisle's domain, and he has re-instituted various pagan beliefs alongside the island's agricultural-base or fruit orchards in the cold and hostile environment of the Hebrides. Temperate fruits aren't supposed to grow there, but miraculously, they do. The cop is entering a world he (and we, the audience) never knew existed. Unlike the remake, I'd say the Summerisle seems inviting and sensual. It's a place you might want to call home. As a stodgy-Christian, Howie doesn't really get this, and it seals-his-fate, creating a nice touch of irony.

It appears the 'new-beliefs' (really ancient, British-ones) are working, for the crops are abundant and the people of Summerisle seem happy and prosperous. There are numerous references to fertility symbols, and the musical-numbers are both inviting and haunting (if not a little goofy), and they lull Howie and the viewer into a complacency (as pagan rituals do to their sacrifices). Seargeant Howie (a daft-name, chosen so the audience doesn't fully-identify with him) is being tested by the pagans for his purity, and the gorgeous Britt Ekland is the bait, though her acting is a bit 'wooden' (or is it 'Wicker'?).

Still, she and her body double add a great erotic flavor to the film that makes paganism seem pretty inviting. Well, unless you're the sacrifice, though believers would likely have no-problem. This then, is the horror component of the film, a non-believer sacrificed by believers in an irrational-rejection of modernity. This kind of romanticism fueled the rise of Nazism, and the burning of the scapegoat.

There are many-reviewers who have said this is about a battle-between paganism and Orthodox Christianity. This is accurate, but there are some nuances to this, and comments on the surrender to irrationality by the pagans and Sergeant Howie.

Let's face it: the cop isn't likable, and we aren't really supposed to identify with-him until the end of the tale as simply another human-being caught-up in something he never wagered on. But that's where it ends. The current version of the 1973 Wicker Man is definitely flawed.

Like a pagan initiation, the story begins as a mystery, both tempting-and-warm, even human. The initiate penetrates more-and-more layers of the mystery of the cult until...you'll have to watch the movie, it is an ending for-the-ages. There really isn't any gore here, just a little-blood, so gorehounds won't like it, but who cares what they think? This is inverted-horror.

The Brothers Emanuel (08/07/2006 repost)

NOTE: This is a reposting of an August 7th piece I did on the Emanuels. Now that Rahm and other neoliberals (the same as neocons) are vying-for-control of the House majority and its culture, I thought a small-reminder of what kind of Democrat he is would be appropriate. He's a hawk, and extremely-conservative--centrist would not describe him accurately. Strangely, he isn't going for House majority whip, but this could be a purely-symbolic move that still leaves him with more-influence. He will unfortunately be on the House Ways and Means committe with Charles Rangle (NY), so don't expect him to support progressive taxation of the wealthiest after he asked them all for money to campaign-with. Emanuel is known for his 'foul mouth' (OK, maybe he isn't half-bad), so we could be in for some fun here. A Democratic Newt Gingrich (same values) with a dirty-yob, oh boy.

Somehow, Rahm Emanuel is being toasted as the architect of the victory, when 9 of the 22 pro-war candidates he chose...lost. He is very-much like a Karl Rove in this respect, but it appears the hawks are outnumbered in the House (and the world). His ilk in the Democratic party will try to prolong the war as long as they can, and even Hillary Clinton will keep-saying we need to 'chart a new-course', meaning the same-one. They just don't get it. For some weird reason, they think they can 'win' in Iraq, when it's clear to the entire world they cannot. It was easy to hide-behind their minority-status, but now that's gone, and the spin-cycle begins in the press.

Many people would say the brothers Emanuel are vapid, amoral opportunists, but I...well, let's get it from the horse's mouth. Back in November of 2005 (more ancient history, I know), when Congressman Jack Murtha spoke-out against the War in Iraq (remember?), the Hollywood superagent's brother who was once a top-advisor to Bill Clinton--now the muckety-muck Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chairman--strode that centrist-line. Yep, he's another one of those Hillary/Lieberman-clones who can't take-a-stand on anything, especially when it comes to murdering-Iraqis. Washpo's Charles Babington reported Rahm Emanuel's reactions to Murtha's epiphanies about Iraq in his usual-manner--he deferred to power:'Murtha's Democratic colleagues reacted warily to his remarks, while Republicans pounced. Rep. Rahm Emanuel (Ill.), head of the House Democrats' campaign effort, said, "Jack Murtha went out and spoke for Jack Murtha."

As for Iraq policy, Emanuel added: "At the right time, we will have a position."At the right time"? Apparently, that means when everyone in Iraq is dead, and the boys at Exxon, Mobil, Chevron (Condi's ex-employer...or are they?), and all the other oil-whores have supped on Iraqi-blood and oil--then, and only then, will his ilk speak-out. Then, we can have NBC or HBO do a miniseries bemoaning the deaths of our victims. The profits will be enormous, wow! I should buy-stock in a media-conglomerate fast...But, I can't leave it at that, no-no-no. This megalomaniac shuns genuinely-progressive canidates in his 6th District (like Christine Ceglis), as well as voting in the House just like Lieberman does in the Senate.

As the Sun Times scribe Lynn Sweet noted in late-march:Perhaps the NRCC is not aware that Emanuel does not always vote the same way as his other more liberal colleagues in leadership, for example, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Just this March 7, Emanuel and Pelosi divided over a key vote on reauthorizing additional amendments to the controversial USA Patriot Act. Emanuel was one of 66 Democrats to vote with 214 Republicans to pass the measure. Pelosi voted with 124 Democrats and 13 Republicans against passage. Moloch, Moloch, devourer of children. Karl Rove and Math

WASHINGTON--It appears obvious that Karl Rove's own secret-statistics and special math (special-ed. math--boo-yah!) were simply in his bulbous-head. He is GIANT BABY-MAN, after-all. Of course, none of the fallout was the fault of Karl Rove and President George W. Bush, but 'forces beyond our control.' Correct in-part, but really just another diversionary-tactic. The public (and the entire world) is tired of your policies in Iraq, it was the primary-reason for the results based on exit-polls. Yes, exit-polls. The rest of the world follows them, except the US during-and-after the 2000 elections. Before that, they were unassailable. Interestingly, Rove tells Time he still isn't buying-them, and this is consistent with 2000. He's going to have to accept feeling alone about this. It was this attitude that sank them, a contempt for public-opinon and the public-will (nevermind the common-good). By telling Americans, 'no, that's not what you think', is only going to piss-them-off.

But we've known for some-time that the Bush administration was irrational and anti-intellectual, and simply not up-to-the-job of running the government. Strangely, this was helpful to their image early-on--certain voters got to enjoy a President who was actually less-intelligent than they were. The problem is, it doesn't work, and the public figured-it-out. The neocons just wanted to let their backers feed at the public-trough and enjoy the power for however-long they could maintain the fiction that they were actually qualified to hold public-office. It was a seizure-of-power, not sour-grapes from the losing-side (Al Gore & the public). There should be investigations into the elections of 2000 and 2004, and even 2006. I am all-for-it, but if such Democratic-hacks as Rahm Emanuel get the majority-posts, it likely won't happen. As far as investigations go--where do you even begin? There's so-much for prosecutors to choose-from it dizzying, even the Teapotdome scandal seems quaint now.

Rove wants to dispel-the-notion that it was simply the war in Iraq, because he has to. It all hinges on Iraq, ultimately, because it isn't going-away anytime soon. Many of the scandals we experienced since the Spring of 2003 surrounded the run-up to war, as well as criminal-policies that led to such scandals as Abu-Ghraib, illegal-rendition and those pesky secret CIA-prisons that have yet-to-be-closed. Even the Democrats won't discuss the permanent bases in Iraq, not even now after the sweep. And where is Russ Feingold? Like Howard Dean and Bernie Sanders, they're trying to push liberals in the party to-the-margins.

This can be combatted in the blogosphere, and the opening-shots have already begun. But realize that there will be far-greater revelations in the coming-months as the investigations unfold. It's not even the darkest-day for the GOP yet. I would go-as-far as to recommend bracing-yourselves, because American soldiers have committed atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan that are actually going to outshine the ones during the Vietnam war once they've been revealed. If we had any innocence before, we won't have much of that naivete that we're known-for left. I think the average American suspects this, and I think it was part of the decision to vote the GOP out-of-office as a majority. Exit-polls are accurate, and we know that Karl Rove's math and head are both fuzzy. Didn't Jim Henson make him in the 1970s?

Yes, Joe Donnelly said on local-television that 'No, this is a move to the middle,' meaning not the left, parroting the emergent party-line of conservative Democrats. Wrong, Joe. If you don't get us universal health-care, and reverse literally everything the Bush administration has had-passed as law--we're going to have your ass for-breakfast. Iraq will continue to deteriorate, and you'll be back here in South Bend, and permanently. The Democratic-majority will be short-lived if you don't end this war immediately. But it's OK, we didn't vote for you because we trusted you. It's wisest not to trust any politician at face-value, not ever. We donated to you, volunteered and campaigned for you, and we're watching you via-the-internet in ways that never existed the last-time you Democrats had a majority in Congress. Watch your backs. I knew you were a wishy-washy, Joe, but that's a good thing sometimes. You'll respond to pressure from us, your constituents, which could be constructive. But you really should fire your advisors and trust-your instincts, it's what defines office-holders with the goods. You had better behave during this term, Rahm Emanuel isn't your boss, WE ARE here in the 2nd district. But I have to also say: congratulations, just make us proud. 19-YEAR-OLD CONSTRUCTION WORKER CHARGED IN THE DEATH OF ADRIENNE SHELLY

NEW YORK CITY--It appears something really didn't fit with the death of deceased-actress, Adrienne Shelly. The suspect is a 19-year-old construction worker named Diego Pillco. NYPD have ascertained that another person's shoe-prints was found at the scene that weren't Shelly's, and Pillco has confirmed that he and Shelly had a few run-ins over noise from the construction-site. There might be other motives that are unknown at this time. Shelly was found hanging-from a shower rod in her New York apartment's bathroom, and the shoe-prints were found on the bathtub. There was no suicide-note at the scene, and friends and family noted that Shelly had been very 'up' about her new film. Pillco is in-custody and his questioning will continue. Police had not ruled-out foul play from the onset of the investigation. We shall see.

CONTENTION OVER SENATE RACE RESULTS LIKELY

THE UNITED STATES--At 11:30 PM Central Time, the Democrats have 48-seats in the Senate (the GOP, 46 so-far), and need a minimum of 51 for a tie-breaking majority. They'll also have to contend-with Joe Lieberman, but I think he can be caged and tamed. The GOP talking-necks are already barking about Bush's veto-power, but they're forgetting he cannot stop investigations into his administration's obvious pattern of criminality. He's done so-much, the Democrats will have to decide which action to break-him with. You cannot 'veto' a congressional-investigation, and if he tries, he's going to funny. It looks grim for the Bush administration, which is good for the human-race and nature. Now is the time to start calling-for federalized election-standards. There must be uniformity in all voting-districts, and all holes must be plugged. It would behoove all activists to focus on this topic while they continue calling to end the war, the illegal-wiretaps, and to investigate all GOP-criminality while they had the majority. This isn't about revenge, it's about saving our democracy, as well as for the safety of the rest of the world. If Democrats win the Senate, expect a hue-and-cry from the GOP, and 'concern' by the media that was not-present during the 2000 elections. The game is changing, and the media and their owners had better behave.

CNN PROJECTION: INCUMBENT CHOCOLA DEFEATED

SOUTH BEND, INDIANA--It's looking solid for Joe Donnelly, with 83% of the vote having been counted as I post this, Chocola is getting a pretty good spanking. I sincerely hope he has gay-hustler Jeff Gannon's phone-number, he'll need it. It'll be time for him to resume exploiting American-workers, but this-time it's going to be in the private-sector, and permanent. Sure, he could run-again, but nobody's going to forget this White House and Congress for at least two-generations. The GOP risked-it-all, and might just be in serious-trouble as a viable-party--unless they change. It's possible that the GOP will be forced to embrace tolerance of homosexuality, for-example. It must be nice to live in a country where the Higher Courts are independent of the Executive, I wonder what that's like. Americans haven't known what that is like since 2000. The conviction of Hussein is for one single-event in 1982 where a group of 148 Sunnis were executed over a botched-attempt to assassinate the Iraqi-dictator. 'The idea is preposterous [Ed.-except it isn't.] that somehow we've been scheming and plotting with the Iraqis.' Actually, Anthony, your-ilk has--like Donald Rumsfeld. Why isn't he testifying about his meetings with Saddam during these trials? Right, we would never have any cause to suspect any meddling in this trial, no-cause whatsoever. Of course they did this to help them in the elections. Guess what? It's not-working. You look stupid...well, you always have, GOP. Just not as bad as the people who voted for you.

No, it won't work anymore, Saddam stopped being the boogeyman once he was captured, just like Noriega (another former 'CIA-asset'). Also, many Americans know we put the Baathist party in-power during the 1960s, and that the CIA trained their internal-security forces (along with East Germany). This paved-the-way for the rise of Saddam Hussein, and was considered one of the CIA's 'favorite jobs.' But that's why many of the internal-documents from that period aren't available to the defense and we, the American public. Ramsey Clark acknowledged that the trial was a joke and was thrown-out for criticizing the trial as a 'sham.' He should know a sham of justice when he sees it--he's overseen (overseer?) quite-a-few of them. That's what an Attorney General does, subvert justice, nationally. Hint: might be time to make the Attorney General of the United States an elected-post. ADRIENNE SHELLY 1966-2006

NEW YORK CITY--Actress Adrienne Shelly was found dead Wednesday in her NYC apartment, she had hung-herself with a bedsheet. She was most-famous for her roles in the indie-films of Hal Hartley, notably The Absolute Truth (1989), and Trust (1990). My personal-favorite was her role in the homage to John Waters, Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me (1993), as possibly the hottest piece of trailer-trash ever. She was also a writer and director, but she had an uneasy relationship with fame that possibly overcame her. One of her last-roles was in Factotum, based on the Charles Bukowski story, and starring Matt Dillon. She was a really talented and beautiful woman who is leaving-behind a husband and a daughter. Modern life got to be too-much. What a horrible-loss to the movies, she will be missed. I'm running-out of reasons to go the theater.

Bob Ney resigns today

Washington D.C.--Today was Bob Ney's (R-Oh.) last day as a congressman.

It's a mixed-bag situation: Ney is one of three Republicans in Congress who voted-against the Patriot Act in 2001.

Ney also voted against normalizing trade relations with China in 2000.

All-in-all, he's a moderate Republican in an ocean of GOP-Bolshevism. But, he's still corrupt. He's the one member of Congress so far who has admitted criminal acts in the Abramoff scandal involving illegal lobbying. One has to wonder if he's the fall-guy they needed, enabling the others (less-moderate incumbents?) in the GOP who haven't been served a subpoena to breath free-air a little longer.

Or at least long enough to keep protecting George W. Bush and his administration as well as all the other crooks in Congress (counting Democrats too) who are obstructing justice by not seriously investigating the rampant criminality that has been a hallmark of this presidency. I'm hoping several Lieberman-like Democrats get caught in the Abramoff net, like Hillary Clinton.

The timing of Ney's resignation is strange, it must have been touch-and-go whether the Bush administration would still need him to retain a majority after November. Apparently, they know something at the GOP that we all don't (a different tactic to steal the elections again?). Maybe they expect a domestic insurrection over this election? The third time's a charm.

EXPECT WAR WITH IRAN & SADDAM HUSSEIN VERDICT-RUMBLINGS AS PRE-ELECTION SURPRISE

THE UNITED STATES--With elections drawing-near, and an almost-inevitable shift of the GOP from power, expect some desperate-acts from the White House. The dirty-tricks are being readied now, and I think the only possible diversions they have left is a war with Iran and a guilty-verdict for Saddam Hussein...or another convenient-attack by 'terrorists' (from nations we call our 'allies'). It's amazing that it's being taken-for-granted that the GOP will attempt stealing the elections again. With the ending of Habeus Corpus (the right to know why you have been imprisoned), and the rollback of the Bill of Rights under the Patriot Acts, we could expect the GOP to call a national-emergency. At that point--if it happened--it will be time for general strikes, and the streets will have to be FULL. I think the public is ready for this confrontation, it has been a long-time-coming. You can only put-it-off, and there are things the public will not have. The irony of a guilty-verdict for Hussein is this: it will cause the insurgency to grow, the violence will escalate.

PROVE IT: FORMER CIA-OPERATIVE CLAIMS GOOGLE HAS SECRET-DEAL

A man who claims to be a former CIA-operative by the name of Robert David Steele has stated on the Alex Jones radio show that Google is secretly-cooperating with the agency on 'research and development'. Giving no-evidence whatsoever, just 'trust-me', Steele stated '"Google was a little hypocritical when they were refusing to honor a Department of Justice request for information because they were heavily in bed with the Central Intelligence Agency, the office of research and development."' OK, so who is Robert David Steele? We don't know. What we do know is that the CIA often spreads disinformation to 'bad-jacket' (make the public think a subject is with the CIA, or other terrorist-organizations) a target. Why would anyone target Google for a bad-jacketing job? Because they didn't obey the Bush administration when they were told to turn-over millions-of-searches on their servers. Verizon did it, Comcast, AT &T, Southern Bell--virtually everyone EXCEPT Google! I think we have the motive.

The most-interesting aspect of this is that the exchange took-place on the Alex Jones radio-show. Fortunately, we know who Jones is. He's done a documentary on Bohemian Grove, the legendary meeting-place of the wealthiest and most-influential that was first brought to the public's attention by C. Wright Mills in his 1954 book, 'The Power Elite.' He's also in TWO Richard Linklater films: Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly (based on the PKD novel). There is a mixed-consensus on Alex Jones on the Left and the Right regarding his take on parapolitics and conspiricism, but he has some significant-supporters and allies. Muckracking-journalist Greg Palast has sung-his-praises, and has been featured in one of Jones's documentaries, and is sometimes found on his syndicated radio-show. While he has offered-up some great resistance to the Patriot Act, and challenged the findings of the 9/11 Commission, he is human and could be wrong. The interview smells-bad, and a media-personality like Jones needs his leads constantly, so was he fooled? Surely, a percentage of his 'whistle-blowers' are simply fakes sent to spread-disinformation (much like the press). We'll have to wait-and-see. If it's true, we can probably see a drop in Google's shares, and it will be earned.

DAGON (2001) review

A lot of people have been sleeping-on this film since it's release in 2002 (2001 in Spain & Europe). Not-since his classic, ReAnimator in 1985 has Stuart Gordon done something so stunning, horrifying, and eerie. There aren't many directors who have captured even a smidgen- of Lovecraft's-abilities at atmosphere, but Gordon is surely the finest. Only one-other director I know-of has captured-this, and that is Dan O'Bannon in his brilliant (but sadly-butchered) The Resurrected (1991). It's a hard job capturing the feel of Lovecraft, and only the best directors can pull-it-off. For American-audiences, making a version of this story that actually works is a challenge; in an age of instant-communications, and few remote-areas in North America, the original-story simply wouldn't work placed in contemporary New England.

Gordon originally wanted to place the story on an island off of Maine, which could almost work, but telecommunications are too-fast nowadays. You could alert society to what was happening in-seconds and the plot would end. This wasn't so when Lovecraft wrote his short-stories, we didn't even have the interstate highway system at that time. And sure, we could have a 1920s period-piece, but how-scary is a story that is 80-years-remote? This is why there aren't many Gothic-horror tales being-made anymore--we are in the modern-age of horror, the scares have to be more-immediate. Gordon's choice of placing the story-location somewhere unfamiliar to-Americans is logical. In-fact, I think the eternal-qualities of Galician-Spain are really inspired, and are even evident in the Celtic-themes in the excellent film-score. Viewers should also be shocked-to-know that the film was made for $3 million, whereas it looks more-like $20 million. I've read that the film did respectable business in Spain, but that for the same-reasons, they found the story too-implausible in contemporary-Galicia.

Since most fans will be interested in this film as Lovecraft-enthusiasts, I won't bother retelling such an incredible-tale. Read H.P. Lovecraft, he is our other Poe. Based-primarily on Lovecraft's 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' (a 1931 novella), and less-so on his early-short, 'Dagon' (1919), we are entreated-to the strange fishing-village through the story of some American yachting-tourists who find-themselves shipwrecked there. The locals don't look quite-right. Many of them never, ever...blink. Some are hideously-deformed, and there are strange croaking-sounds emanating-from everywhere. What is this place? Was that--it isn't possible. That priest's hands were webbed! Who are these people? What are they? It's always-raining in this film, and it adds to the eeriness and oppressiveness of the story. There are some excellent moments of gore that have to be seen to be believed. You can feel Lovecraft's fear of the oceans and fish--he was known to leave a party if fish was on the menu, he was so-disgusted by ocean-life. If you share this loathing with us, you will be in for an added-repulsion, it's on-offer here. The story of Dagon is thematically-linked to Lovecraft's fear of going-insane, also. Gordon and screenwriter Dennis Paoli home-in on this fact, and exploit it well. The main-protagonist is genetically-destined for a fate that would horrify most human-beings. Lovecraft was fearful he was doomed-to-madness by heredity. His parents were institutionalized before he was an adolescent. His gift for genius is how he was able to find the universal-threads of our common-destiny as a species, and he used science as his jumping-off point for many of his tales.

But, then, there is the pulp-side of Lovecraft that all of us fans adore: the Stuart Gordon approach that celebrates the wonder and imagination of fantasy. Our inner-child that just enjoys the slime, the monsters and the imagery. In-fact, there is as-much slime and gunk in Dagon as there is blood in ReAnimator (though Gordon's From Beyond wins on the slime-factor). There is so much more to enjoy in this movie. Stuart Gordon's films simply look great, almost like the juiciest Hong Kong cinema. The colors are vibrant, and present when they have the most-meaning, and his shot-compositions are excellent, just tons of eye-popping images to enjoy. It's ironic that the co-creator of 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' still has to make films on such low-budgets, but it doesn't seem to faze him. If-anything, I think he sees it as a challenge, and it pushes him to excel with-less--to innovate. While we wait for Del Toro's announced-version of 'At the Mountains of Madness', Stuart Gordon has already done ANOTHER Lovecraft-adaptation of 'Dreams in the Witch House' for the Masters of Horror series (available on DVD). Nothing will stop this guy except death, and we should all be proud of Mr. Gordon, one of our finest directors of-horror. He's good because he's from the Midwest. Hurry-up, Guillermo, the world is ending.

MENTAL HEALTH & POWER: IRAQ IS ENDING, BUT CHOCOLA & THE GOP WON'T ADMIT IT

South Bend,Indiana--I was watching a Chris Chocola (GOP) advertisement yesterday, and it dawned-on- me how completely-insane this moron is. The ad was something that would have worked in 2004, but when it's obvious America is never, ever going to 'win' in Iraq (what that means is anyone's guess). Not ever.

But Chocola, sitting cocksure in his Mr. Rogers sweater, leans-forward to the camera to tell us widdle' constituents that we 'must win for the safety of our families.' I thank God we are losing, but it would be sweet if nobody was getting-killed--Iraqis or Americans. The advertisement really flies-in-the-face of reality when we have lost 103-soldiers in October alone for an illegal-war without any tangible-aims (except cutting the flow of Iraqi-oil), and yet I think his Democratic-opponent Mr. Donnelly is going to lose to such an uncharismatic pud.

But Iraq is all he has, and it will be Chris Chocola's legacy too. I plan to remind-him until both of us are dead, I'm his political-memory and shadow for life. If he loses and ever runs for public-office again, he's my ONE cause. Activists, take-note: stop trying to fight some generalized-nouns, go-after real, tangible subjects and targets-for-exposure and ridcule. Play dirty, no-holds-barred, because nice-nice doesn't work. You have to have RISK for results.

Chocola's opponent, Mr. Joe Donnelly: he's going to lose. Why? He STILL hasn't come-out against-the-war, he just won't do it. Local anti-war activists aren't exactly prodding-him, either. But this kind of wishy-washiness is probably part of why he lost the last two-times against a Republican--Donnelly just won't act like an opposition-candidate.

Either he's listening too much to campaign advisers (people we should all be watching very-closely), or he just lacks any balls. He has so much ammunition--more than any candidate could hope-for--and he just won't use any of it. Maybe he's just too-nice, though he owns a local-business, so how nice could he be? Iraq is a game played by and for elites, which is why they should die on the battlefields. I'd volunteer Chocola and his kids for front-line duty against the Sunni militias. We'll put them in a poorly-armored Hummer, with no flak-jackets or adequate headgear.

While Saudi Arabia's ruling-class continues to be the paymaster of extremist-terrorism, and while Pakistan still trains them, the GOP and Bush administration cover for them. They protect-them from...us, the average American and the Saudi and Pakistani-peoples. The American State Department has created this mess, even before Bush.

Yes, even Bill Clinton is to blame. We supported and became entangled with nations who provide us oil, but who also oppress their people. They then take this reasonable rage against-them, and then channel it into extremist-causes for their own geopolitical aims. It's not a secret.

Well, except to people who would vote for Chris Chocola--the stubborn idiots. Yes, it would be best if some people didn't ever vote. This is an unpopular-position on the Left, but it has merit. After all, the Nazis were elected legally into the Reichstag, something the GOP cannot say since the elections of 2000 (indeed!). Even Hugo Chavez was elected legally. If you want people voting the next Adolf Hitler into-office so you can feel-better about everybody voting, you should check yourself. Yes, you can be too liberal.

So, when Chris Chocola was leaning into the camera to explain to us child constituents that we all have it wrong, and that Iraq is winnable--were you angry about it? If not, you're either hopelessly-ignorant, or you can't feel anything anymore. It was insulting, like his whole time in office, or his very existence. Still, if he loses, Jeff Gannon has some gay-hustler work for him on K Street. Does it matter if the GOP keeps their majority? I don't think so, they're clearly self-destructing anyway.

Who but they could write such a disasterous-agenda? Who is resigning-in-droves because they have to? Who made them go into Iraq? Who made Mark Foley touch congressional pages, and who forced-them into covering-it-up? Who made them accept bribes from lobbyists like Jack Abramoff? If they win the elections, it won't go away.

Yes, that's right Republicans, your party is over. From 1981, then 1994-to-now, you had your anti-1960s. Tim McVeigh was your Weathermen [Ed., 08.26.2008-Or was he?], and Gingrich was your Bobby. We can thank God that Reagan wasn't your JFK, and none of the right will ever produce an MLK Jr. You're going-the-way of the Whig Party, the people you replaced 150-years-ago. This time, it's over for similar-reasons--a split over the role of the Federal government.

Traditional conservatives feel betrayed (welcome aboard) over this, wanting less government-encroachment into their lives, and some fiscal-responsibility (you too?). Illegal-wiretapping and the ending of Habeus Corpus qualifies as encroachment. The Bush administration and the GOP-controlled Congress have done the exact opposite of what they promised, expanding intrusive government more than the Democrats have in over 20-years. And are we any safer? Get real, ask people in New Orleans that.

Ask people in New York City, when NORAD failed them on 9/11. Yes, our entire defense system is worthless, a waste of money. Spending more on it won't help either. The only way our country can be secure is by taking care of eachother, making government do-our-bidding and providing what is necessary in the modern world: a national health care plan, laws against shipping jobs overseas (bye-bye NAFTA & CAFTA), progressive taxation of the richest, a cap on carbon-dioxide emissions, sane environmental policies, stern white collar crime laws and enforcement, stern laws restricting the power of lobbyists and corporations, defense-spending cuts, and on-and-on.

No, the GOP loses either way, which is somehow difficult for most on the so-called 'Left' to grasp. This is because, like most Americans, they have an 'all-or-none' mentality that comes from watching too-many crappy Hollywood movies (mainly action-movies and westerns). It's not an all-or-none equation, that's not how human society or objective reality works.

Here's a great-example of that idea hitting-a-wall: Yesterday, the Air Force requested $50 Billion in emergency funds to be able to airlift wounded and killed American soldiers.

Rumsfeld decides on November 15th if they qualify, conveniently after the elections, just like the Libby-trial. Yes, Scooter Libby is going to reveal a whole lot of information along with Mr. Jack Abramoff. Abramoff is so busy ratting they had to give him a desk in his cell, where for four hours every day he outlines all the bribes, gifts and cross-alliances. Many more heads are going to roll after November 7th, which alone could insure a Democratic majority. At that time, it will be appropriate to pile-on them for radical-reforms. Rest assured they will fight any gains made by working-class Americans if we let them. The fight will only have begun.

The Democrats will try to prolong this War in Iraq, you can bank-on-it. Those dozen-or-more permanent military bases are there for a reason--we're there for the long-haul according-to the GOP and Democratic Party. This is why none of them will discuss the bases. Remember what military-bases in Saudi Arabia got us? Possibly, 9/11. We'd all better get-ready, the tidal-wave of bodies (American this-time) is coming to our shores, and soon, and a lot of angry veterans. Many of them will be radicalized forever, and some of them will run for office. With some luck, we might wipe-away an entire political-generation. This would be a best-case scenario. Politicians like Chris Chocola have bet the farm with the Bush administration, and he's voted for practically everything they've wanted him to (except on immigration).

It's possible George W. Bush has come to campaign for Chris Chocola more than any other GOP-candidate, since he practically lives-here. Perhaps they promised Chocola a kingdom in Hell? I hope he gets that kingdom. Once again, as I write this, a local SWAT team is doing their target-practice at a nearby FOP firing-range. Burst-after-burst of fully-automatic volleys, so they must need the practice...
