"We won the Cold War," but didn't want it to end: reflections on the Thatcher-Gorbachev revelations
WWW--We did? Who won it? It wasn't the average person. Considering the recent revelations about former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher ("Iron Maggie," a beloved to neocons along with the Maoist veneration of Ronald Reagan) and her discussions with the final Soviet President Mikael Gorbachev--that Thatcher and the rest of the West including America--didn't want reunification of Germany under any circumstances, you'd think it would be everywhere in our media.
Fine, it came out on September 11th, our new sacred national day, but this is earth-shattering news, it downs many myths about the Cold War, including the legacy of President Ronald Reagan. The contention of "we won the Cold War" just doesn't float anymore, they wanted to keep it going, and it served many purposes for the power structures on both sides, and Thatcher's comments underscore what many have suspected all along: the Cold War was a lie, a big lie. I could have told you that, but now we have solid-proof.
As usual, the official line and rhetoric are just window dressing, a lie, cover. The Western powers wanted the Soviet Union to stay-in-place for the foreseeable future during Peristroika (the thaw of authoritarianism in the Warsaw Pact nations) and the collapse of the Berlin Wall. This exchange comes less than three months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, and it is extraordinary.

I was deeply impressed by the courage of General Jaruzelski in Poland and by his patriotism. Of course, the future of Poland and its alliance with you are very important. I noticed that you reacted calmly to the results of the Polish elections and generally to processes taking part in this and other Eastern European countries. My understanding of your position is following: you welcome each country developing in its own way on the condition that Warsaw Pact stays. I understand this position perfectly.
Now I would like to say something in complete confidence and would ask you not to record this part of our conversation.
Gorbachev: I agree to your request.

Thatcher: We are very concerned about the processes taking place in Eastern Germany. Some big changes could happen there, forced partly by the state of the society and partly by the illness of Erich Honecker. One example of this is the flight of thousands of people from the GDR to the FRG. All of this is on the surface, it is very important but even more important is something else.
The reunification of Germany is not in the interests of Britain and Western Europe. It might look different from public pronouncements, in official communiqué at Nato meetings, but it is not worth paying ones attention to it. We do not want a united Germany. This would have led to a change to post-war borders and we can not allow that because such development would undermine the stability of the whole international situation and could endanger our security.
In the same way, a destabilisation of Eastern Europe and breakdown of the Warsaw Pact are also not in our interests. Of course, internal changes are happening in all Eastern European countries, somewhere they are deeper than in others. However, we would prefer if those processes were entirely internal, we would not interfere in them or push the de-communisation of Eastern Europe. I can say that the President of the United States is of the same position. He sent me a telegram to Tokyo in which he asked me directly to tell you that the United States would not do anything that might put at risk the security of the Soviet Union or perceived by the Soviet society as danger. I am fulfilling his request.

A Visit from Deutschland (Űber Alles) over Ron Roughead
Site Meter--It begs-the-question: is the German government interested in the story of Ret. Col. Ronald Roughead (former chief of IMN and probably let-go from SAIC)? He was definitely privy to high-level NATO clearances as a Defense Attache and a U.S. Army Colonel. Note that NATO (do a search of this site) has visited here before and had some good reads.

"America shoots-down a spy satellite" is a cover-story
The State Department--The mainstream media has done its best to convince us that this was Skylab 2.0, a case of space junk crashing back down into backyards everywhere. That was the misdirection, but the reality is that it was a real world test and use of the missile defense shield system, a deadly new step in the global arms race. A source who witnessed earlier tests in the South Pacific almost ten-years-ago told me at the time how wasteful and faulty the program was.
What a difference ten years makes, but do we really need this stupid thing? Does it really justify the billions that it cost to develop and make? Will the reactions of other nations make us safer, knowing that we possess the capability of a first nuclear strike with a defense shield to "protect" us from the inevitable retaliation?
Assuming that the radar installations being constructed in Poland and the Czech Republic are part of the global infrastructure of this anti-missile system, is it really wise to add to the intimidation of Russia by pushing Kosovo's (as Germany and NATO did with Croatia and Slovenia in the early-1990s--the rest is history) independence from Serbia? Ask most Russians and they'll tell you that "the Serbs are our brothers," a healthy reminder that Pan-Slavism is hardly dead.
Thanks-a-lot Werner Von Braun (and Robert Goddard). The continuing American presence in Iraq and Afghanistan also fuels Russia's justified paranoia, also including NATO's presence in those countries, and within the Balkans. How would Americans react if Chavez stationed peace keepers along the Rio Grande?
We shouldn't be surprised that Serbs are attacking the American Embassy in their Capitol considering how much the Clinton administration and the rest of NATO used them as their genocide scapegoat to bring about the fragmentation of Yugoslavia. Not everyone in Western power circles has learned the lessons of why WWI happened. Wesley Clark's comments that the rioters who attacked and set-fire to our embassy were "extremists" could be held-up against those of the Hapsburg governors a century ago. The differences and the denials of reality are striking.
Very little has changed, and the Serbs aren't ever going to stop fighting against what they see as threats to their sovereignty from outside the region. America and NATO are bent on the domination of the Balkans and the encirclement of Russia, this much is certain. This missile test is just part of the plan.

Have You Seen This Cookie Dough Eating Woman? Editor Ponders Whether He's Gotten a Visit from 'Dr.' Paula Neble
SITE METER--A curious gaggle of visitors have been clustering to this site from almost the very moment of its coverage about the legal predicament of Deborah Jeane Palfrey. So far, it's been a truly stunning-array.
It could be presumed that many of these visitors are professionals, individuals in officialdom, corporate executives and functionaries, members of think-tanks, former presidential advisers (and/or their agents), agents of the federal government, private military and intelligence contractors (SAIC & MITRE have visited--the 'mitre' being the fish-shaped hat the Nazi Pope wears, originally coming from the Cult of Dagon), our generally poor mainstream media, some officeholders, possible intelligence offices of several nations, NATO's offices, numerous federal departments and administrations, Congress, the Navy (one of the most frequent of 'official' guests), the United States Army--even the unholy five-sided Pentagon itself has been here, that archetype of evil and death.
Washington D.C. isn't just 'Hollywood for ugly people,' it's that strangest-of-places where there are so many professional conventions, minus the normal conventionalism of the little people. It's academic to say that many of these site hits are individuals in the phone records of Pamela Martin & Associates. It's certain.
But even early-on, there were some visitors who just kept coming back, popping-up on the site meter periodically, and that was especially curious to this writer. The National Institutes of Health is one, while one from Severna, Maryland just returns over-and-over. The one with Warl.org is plainly peculiar. While Palfrey's client-base extends into Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and even New York City, there have been a number of hits to this site from Maryland that just keep returning, and they too revisit over-and-over again.
NIH seemed out-of-place at first, but then, you have to realize that some of Ms. Palfrey's escorts were extremely professional individuals, and so were the clients--especially so in some cases. Those professional clients and small businessmen aren't the ones the public wants and needs to know about--we need to know what officials in (and out) of the phone records and contractors of the government are doing on our dollar and in our name. Are any of these site hits 'Dr.' Paula Neble? Yes, I'm being sarcastic, but I'm saying she has visited here. We know her handlers have.
Paula Neble has claimed to many people that she was a doctor--she isn't a real doctor (doctor of lunacy perhaps), or even a college graduate, and it's likely that the government has probably helped her to go 'underground' (a hint to journalists: stakeout her mother's house if you haven't been already).
Neble is that strange case: she isn't really the kind of woman Palfrey appears to have hired normally, so perhaps she tried to have all the appearance of being like the others. Why? Surely, it could have just been a ploy to get hired, and Neble may have been extremely out of her depth. It would explain a lot.
Being the same age as many of her government handlers at Justice, she's probably felt a kind of camaraderie with some of them, since they also appear to be overextended themselves. Or maybe it's just a case of the Stockholm syndrome on her part. Who ever said playtime ended after childhood? Life is like the movies. Would they all be more well-behaved in a better world? Nah. Playtime's over, and Hollywood's on-strike. This is about affecting a real defendant's life with real world consequences for all involved. Justice isn't being served, and that's serious. This writer believes Judge Kessler suspects this as well.
Remember the late Dr. Brandy Britton, a doctor of Sociology? Dead. That's serious, and so is 55 years in prison. That's one's natural life. Equally serious is the threat posed by a case like this to due process. If the government has had such a great case all-along with such heavy, punitive charges against the defendant, why then do they keep claiming secrecy rules because there's 'an ongoing investigation' that could be compromised? That's a lame excuse, it's as flaccid as a politician's penis.
Palfrey named Neble in a civil suit for a breach of contract back in the Spring of this year (for engaging in prostitution against her express wishes), and Neble has been that one lone name we all learned early-on in this story. She's the first of the government's witnesses/informants to be made public. We probably wouldn't even know her name had the defendant not filed the civil suit against her. Where is she hiding, and why is she being afforded the kind of anonymity that the defendant hasn't?
At this point, it should be obvious that the prosecution knows full-well that Palfrey has a good idea of the names of her accusers and some of their backgrounds...but the public doesn't, and the prosecution wants to prevent this for some reason. Conversely, they have selectively released edited evidence to specific media outlets such as the Smoking Gun.
We--the public--know virtually nothing about Paula Neble...and neither does her mother. What she appears to be is a pathological liar being harbored and used as a 'cooperating witness' against Deborah Jeane Palfrey in a government case gone very wrong. We just don't know much of anything except that she had Senator David Vitter and Harlan Ullman as clients and a few anecdotes. Paula's poor mother must be appalled.
Until May, she had no idea what her daughter was up to, and it seems very few others did either. This is troubling in a criminal case with an impending trial set for February 19th, but Judge Kessler could open the doors to a real discovery process after the end of this month. But it should be remembered that Palfrey has filed the suit against as many as 15 other 'Jane Does,' probably being her last crew of escorts.
Research by the New York Daily News (by journalist James Meek back in early-May) and WTOP has uncovered the fact that Neble never earned a doctorate, or any degree at all. According to Meek's questioning of her mother, she only took a few biology classes at the college level. Why would she go around claiming she had a doctorate when she didn't? Again, she was presenting a picture of a different person to Palfrey and others, and the reasons could be very banal. But, amazingly, that's it--we know nothing more about her, and she changed her name in 2001.
She really seems like a mixed-up hustler who got into something much bigger than she could handle. This has some interesting echoes with the Naval Academy 'supply officer' who is--astonishingly enough--still employed at Annapolis! It might be assumed that she must have served some overarching purpose, and that they know some pretty compromising information on (self-) 'important' people. People like Harlan Ullman and Vitter. This writer's money is on a connection to the Cunningham scandal, and Palfrey has dropped the name in the past. The involvement of SAIC-employee tends towards this thesis as well.
Neble didn't have much of an education when she worked for Pamela Martin & Associates, so it's strange that anyone would have believed that a cookie-dough eating, sleazy romance novel reading Texan could be anything other than what she really was: a pathological liar and a loser with little-or-no grasp of the truth. Did she have some gift for the gab? How did she pull-it-off? At least that's what acquaintances of Neble have been saying. This site enjoins anyone with direct information about Ms. Neble to come forward with it, we're all interested to know what kind of individuals the government uses as witnesses/informants under the Bush administration's (or any other) Justice Department. Neble's old apartment was catty corner to the Pentagon, and like many of the current administration's ranks and supporters, she's from Houston, Texas.
The government had better hope she's not their star witness. She's out there, somewhere, eating cookie-dough on the taxpayer's dime, lying to her government babysitters who likely tired of her boorishness long-ago. Funny, she sounds like my ex. My guess is the feds are keeping Ms. Plump in a safe house--not from criminal danger of any kind, but from public scrutiny since she's already displayed all the traits of a bad witness for any case. Where? Probably within the Washington D.C. area, and that she and her handlers have been poring-over the internet since they have a lot of time on their hands. They should, they might be in a lot of trouble. You can probably bank on that one too.
And it would also be interesting to know specifically if Ms. Neble ever had any contact (physical) with Ret. Colonel Ronald Roughead of SAIC, and Brent Wilkes. SAIC could be linked to the Cunningham scandal by-way of 'Hookergate.' We could be finding-out a whole lot more of the narrative after the TRO (temporary restraining order) hearing on November 28th, the other turkey day with the accusers playing the bird. Here's to a good carving-up.
With luck, federal District Judge Gladys Kessler will allow Palfrey's civil suit to go forward, and the accuser will finally be forced out into the sunlight. Neble won't be the only name released after a lifting of the restraining order on Palfrey's suit against Neble, we'll know more about her accusers and why the government prosecution didn't want us to. FOR NATO: Pier Paolo Pasolini's Salò (1975) review
Social order at the expense of liberty is hardly a bargain. ---The Marquis de Sade
So you say you've seen nearly every major Italian giallo? You've seen your Argento, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Michele Soavi, and even all of the "classics" of Italian film? You've seen your Leone, Fellini, DeSicca, Bertolucci, Martino, and even most of the world classics? By this point, you've probably seen it all, and you think there's no film that will shock you?
If you haven't seen Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Salo: 120 Days of Sodom," you are flatly wrong. Pasolini didn't even live to see the release of this film. He was "murdered" by a male hustler (or so the official story plays).
Who was Pier Paolo Pasolini? Pasolini was the most important postwar intellectual in Italy, period. Like a Renaissance polymath, he was adept at journalism, the novel, poetry, screenwriting, directing motion-pictures, painting and drawing, and more. The polymath also liked cruising teenage boys, was a walking scandal, and yet paradoxically truly was the conscience of postwar Italy until his murder on November 2nd, 1975. He could only be an irritant in the culture he arose in, and he pricked the conscience of a nation. It's likely that he engineered his own murder, placing its date on the day of the dead as a frame...
Pasolini's revolutionary philosophy was simultaneously opposed to fascism and communism, and he had many enemies in the political arena, as well as the religious one with the Vatican. All said, however, it's possible that Pier Pasolini was murdered by a right wing assassination team under the aegis of "GLADIO," a NATO program of secret armies throughout Western Europe. GLADIO began, ostensibly, as a defense against a hypothetical Soviet invasion of Europe.
Overall, GLADIO was more often used to attack legitimate leftist political parties, trade unions, and populist groups. GLADIO operations were responsible for breaking the Marseilles dock strikes in the late 1940s as just one example of their handiwork. Their activities in Italy during the Cold War are known to be extensive. Italy is a flashpoint, a fixed, coordinate in the nexus of control of the Western power structure.
In Italy, the Red Brigade bombings in the 1970s were even instigated by GLADIO operatives to justify a law and order crackdown on the Italian Communist Party who were poised to take power at that time. It's a mystery as to how much influence the CIA had in all of this. The existence of the P-2 conspiracy (oddly, involving the Vatican, the CIA, KGB, and renegade Freemasons!) had yet to break in the international media. All this aside, there were dozens of politically motivated killings in 1970s Italy, and Pasolini's was just one of many.
One has to ponder the Vatican's involvement in his murder, as they were a primary adversary of Pasolini. And so, Salo enters this bloody fray. It could not be more controversial, and it's a scream of rage against how little we all really care about or value human life. Pasolini was outraged and disappointed with the human condition, and Italian politics had become a bloody chaos, leading director Sergio Leone to remark at the time that, "Italian politics have become ridiculous." Both directors were friends.
The scenario of Salo is fairly simple: a group of Italian fascists retreat to a palace in Northern Italy (where there was a great deal of support for Italian fascism and the Monarch) with a group of sixteen captive boys and girls. One is a bishop, a judge, a politician, and-so-on, representing symbols of established authority. It is Mussolini's short-lived Republic of Salo, created especially for him by the disintegrating Nazi regime. Hence, "Salo" is a title that almost any Italian of the 1970s (or today) might recognize. For 120 days, they degrade their victims in almost every imaginable--and unimaginable--manner.
There is homosexual rape, sundry forms of buggery, forcing people to eat excrement, forced heterosexual couplings, forced marriage, sadism of every kind, and finally, death. Just about everything you could imagine occurs, and worse. Of course, it's all based loosely on De Sade's tale and stays pretty close to the text's themes and scenarios.
Pasolini chapters each section with some of the structure of Dante's "Inferno," which is a real mark of his genius. One can even sense an atavistic Manichean influence in the work, which isn't surprising: Friuli has been historically known as an ancient citadel on the Northern "boot" of Italy, where the ideas of the world hating sect are still evident in the local culture. Pasolini's home state, Friuli, has been thought of as a place of subversion for centuries.
The Italian polymath understood that, under the right circumstances, we are all capable of these depredations. This is a lesson that he and others learned during the resistance to Italian and German fascism in Italy during WWII. Pasolini witnessed and experienced injustices committed by the partisans, losing his own brother to a firing squad.
There's a little Hitler in everyone, and we all the potential to become assassins under the proper conditions. Beyond that, To say this film is merely a statement on fascism would be wrong--it's a manifesto on what cruelty rests within all human hearts, especially once one has supped on power. In Salo and his other works in other mediums, Pasolini is saying that humanity has a dark heart and that nothing is really true.
This was the point that "Italy's conscience" had reached artistically by 1975, though his existential crisis regarding the future of humanity had begun much earlier. Salo was always lurking there in Pasolini's mind, waiting for its time to emerge. Some online reviewers have stated that they didn't find the film shocking--they should check themselves into a clinic somewhere, as Salo is beyond shocking. But it should be remembered that De Sade was only writing about the sexual habits of his kind--the aristocracy before the French Revolution of 1789. De Sade wasn't simply trying to shock. He was chronicling the sexual tastes and behaviors of the French aristocracy before the revolution.
I've noticed that even avid fans of contemporary directors such as Takashi Miike respect the power of this film. Miike has some similarities in theme and style with Pasolini, but goes for a more genre, stylized look (it's not the heady 1970s anymore). Even John Waters lists this film as sicker than his own worst offenders. It could be argued that Desperate Living (1977) is an oblique spoof of Salo. To say I was shocked by this film would be an understatement. But, besides being pretty sick, this film looks astonishingly lush and challenges the audience by shoving the beautiful and the grotesque in our faces. This is another aspect of Pasolini's genius of showing us depredations in such a lovely setting.
Salo transcends the subversive and never fails to shock. The late Tonnino della Colli's cinematography lends the film a look that could be hung in the Louvre, and it gives the film a greater subversive edge overall. Several of the shot compositions resemble well-known works of Western art. Della Colli was director of photography for Fellini, Sergio Leone, and many other classic Italian directors. It should be noted that the film is not "legitimately available" in the United State for copyright reasons. However, there are very good copies out there even though it's not in print. I found a copy that's an exact duplicate of the original US edition for a decent price, so it is out there to be found with a little searching.
The Criterion edition is reportedly the most expensive collector's DVD in the world, going for as much as $1,000.00 USD. [Ed., 08.31.2008--Which is now probably devalued with the new Criterion edition.] This was the best transfer in 1998, but it appears that there is a new continental European DVD purported to be definitive, as well as a BFI edition that's unexceptional. This writer possesses a few Ken Russell DVDs ("Salome's Last Dance") that are worth as much as $300.00 USD, so this is a shocker! It's funny to see used DVDs of the big Hollywood fare at $3.99 USD, while these are in the hundreds! It says a lot about what is lasting and meaningful to people, and it's not blockbuster movies.
A dubious company called "Water Bearer" has a set of Pasolini's other works, but I have it on good word that they are of extremely poor quality and aren't restored and come from aging 35mm prints. It would be nice if Criterion did a Pasolini Box that included a new HD transfer of "Salo" with extensive restoration. Salo is one of the most important films ever made. We all stand accused, even the filmmaker, and that's the point. Be forewarned: not for children or adults who fear soul-searing, raw existentialism. So, why? Why would anyone want to watch this?
NOTE: The "ass-judging-scene" is similar to photos of the "flesh pyramid" at Abu-Ghraib. The new Criterion edition will bring a fresh reassessment of this Italian masterpiece, with only the omission of one extraneous 25 second scene. It will be HD from the best film elements. Brace yourselves.
