Site Meter--You'd think that Deborah Jeane Palfrey (aka "the DC Madam") was still alive. I have to wonder if Mr. Taylor is worried about his reputation after a recent article at Rawstory by Larisa Alexandrovna and Muriel Kane exposed his plea deal shenanigans with Chiquita bribing paramilitaries in Colombia not to disrupt their banana plantations. This is something I find funny since he offered Palfrey a very good plea deal, so he has a strange habit of offering criminals good ones!

Surely, Taylor was breaking the law as much as he could for the people who appointed him while he was at the DOJ (under Bush II, the DOH!). And while I'm on it, why hasn't President Obama fired all the Bush II appointments? One would think he's no different from the last guy, contrary to stupid comments coming from Michael Moore (who's looking more and more like Father Coughlin these days).

Naturally, I googled the name of this firm, and what did I get? First entry: DLA Piper, who "Represents emerging growth and high technology companies, with offices throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the US." A global firm that originates out of the UK. Sounds familiar, like Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. You think they've done busiess with each other, know each other? DLA Piper has "acquired" Gray, Cary, Ware & Freidman recently, in 2005. Oh sure, they didn't read, but they're searching on Jeffrey A. Taylor. Why? Does he need help? Are they investigating him for someone? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he needs help, and he should get it. There are literally hundreds of mental health professionals in most directories...

Accused Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich loses Homeland Security Clearance--what other accused politicians have?

Washington D.C.--There's no indication that former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens lost his security clearance during the legal proceedings in his own case, so why the move on Blagojevich's? To hurt him, to make him appear "bad," to assassinate his character. Yes, yes, one was a senator, the other a governor--except that Stevens was under investigation for a very long time as Blagojevich has been (years), and there was every indication that he was guilty, just like the Governor of Illinois.

Great, they have a lot in common...except in how they're being treated. At least Ted Stevens is going to have a hard time practicing law in Alaska, but does it matter? He's in his eighties. Stevens got the kid-glove treatment for far longer. Yes, there have been "ongoing investigations" into Blagojevich for years, which is not simply odd but smells of someone gunning for someone.

On Stevens's last day in the Senate, he was given a standing ovation. It wasn't reassuring that anything was about to change in Congress anytime soon. This is an individual--not a man--who was convicted of seven felonies by a jury of his peers. You read that right if you didn't somehow know it already: seven felony convictions. Stevens was also on committees and subcommittees that dealt directly with the DHS.

There's no indication from the record that he was ever stripped of any of his security clearances at any point until it was clear he was convicted and leaving office.

That's not the case with Blagojevich, and yet, the Bush II administration must be behind some of it--they still have sixteen days left in office, not the Obama team. Surely, they requested it--someone did--and it's safe to assume that it was for political reasons that cross party lines into the realms of class loyalty and preserving a rotten barrel. By all appearances, Ted Stevens retained his DHS security clearance (and his general security clearance as a sitting representative) until he was indicted in July 2008. Blagojevich hasn't even been indicted yet, but the calls to move quickly in unseating him stand in stark contrast with the treatment of other politicians accused of criminal behavior.

That's a matter of procedure at that point, but it should have been stripped from Stevens much earlier than it was, but Republicans can do anything they want.

Somehow, a man with seven felony convictions deserves a standing ovation before the Senate of the United States, while a standing governor of Illinois deserves no presumption of innocence until proven guilty, including the removal of said clearance, and so on. If that's not a contemptible attitude for due process to serve political ends, then nothing is. Republican senators did their best to block stripping Stevens from holding leadership roles on committees for exactly one year after the FBI raided his home. His indictment forced their hand.

Governor Blagojevich hasn't even technically been indicted yet and U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald is asking for "more time" to shore-up one. Curious, that--all of it. Perhaps we'll all be singing "The Wreck of the Patrick Fitzgerald" before long.

President-elect Obama recently said, "If I found out that there were

high officials who knowingly, consciously broke existing laws,

engaged in cover-ups of those crimes with knowledge forefront, then I

think a basic principle of our Constitution is nobody above the law."

Attorney General-designate Eric Holder recently said top Bush

Administration officials "authorized the use of torture, approved of

secret electronic surveillance of American citizens, secretly

detained American citizens without due process of law, denied the

Writ of Habeas Corpus to hundreds of accused enemy combatants, and

authorized the use of procedures that both violate international law

and the United States Constitution."

We must now hold them to honor their words of accountability.

The Bush administration has refused to investigate its own crimes and

President Bush may issue blanket pardons before he leaves, indeed we

fully expect him to even try to pardon himself. But that is all the

more reason why we must keep as much heat as possible on the

potential for real post inauguration prosecutions. No pardon could

possibly be broad enough to exonerate the entire litany of the crimes

of the outgoing White House without itself raising serious

constitutional questions.

President Obama must appoint a Special Prosecutor - ideally Patrick

Fitzgerald - to fully investigate these crimes and prosecute those

responsible to demonstrate that we are truly a Nation of Laws and no

one - including the President - is above the law. And you can make

Washington D.C.--Now, how's that for transparency? This is impressive (see link below). These are the majority of the 3,000 documents and email-transcripts turned over by the Bush administration. 

They all regard the US Attorney firings, and some are pretty explosive. The House Judiciary committee knew they had these and told them so, otherwise we wouldn't be seeing these communiques. Were it not for the fact that the Bush administration is on the ropes now, they would stall and drag their feet just as they continue to over the minutes of their meetings with the representatives of energy conglomerates in 2001. Those minutes probably lay out the last six-years in stunning detail--stunning because of their calculation and brazenness. The whole shithouse is going up, hallelujah.
