Yeah, and everyone laughed at Reagan--until he'd "won." Americans tend to forget (almost everything) that there was a lot of voter-apathy at that time. Also, the GOP was caught disenfranchising tens-of-thousands of Black Americans. Sound familiar? Belittle him--yes--but realize that he's a real threat, another Bush and another...uh, Bush.
